How to prepare for an ultrasound examination?

Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive, safe, and painless medical procedures that use high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal body. Here are some steps to help prepare for an ultrasound examination:

1. Drink plenty of water: For most abdominal ultrasound exams, you will be asked to drink water and not empty your bladder before the test. Drinking water will help fill your bladder and make it easier for the technician to capture clear images.

2. Follow diet and medication instructions: If you are scheduled for an ultrasound of your gallbladder, liver, or pancreas, you may need to avoid eating or drinking certain foods and liquids. Ask your doctor or technician for instructions on what to eat or drink before your exam. Also, make sure to inform them of any medications you’re taking, especially those that may affect your digestive system.

3. Wear loose, comfortable clothing: You may need to change into a hospital gown for the examination. However, wearing loose, comfortable clothing can make it easier for the technician to access the area that needs to be examined.

4. Arrive early: Arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete any paperwork and allow time for parking and finding the location of your appointment.

5. Follow instructions: Listen and follow the instructions given by the technician or doctor performing the exam. They may ask you to lie still or hold your breath at certain times to capture clear images.

6. Inform the technician of any pain or discomfort: If at any point during the procedure you experience pain or discomfort, let the technician know immediately.

7. Make sure you bring your referral, Medicare card (if applicable) and all previous examination films with you.

Remember, always consult with your doctor or technician for specific instructions on how to prepare for your ultrasound examination.
